We all appear to have different opinions relating to the boob surgery. After having to have 2 surgeries as well as another one coming up, I am still pro the boob job. Although mine was a complicated case, I still don’t regret getting it done. Not only does having nice perky boobs boost your confidence but it also fills out your bras/bikinis and makes them look 100% better. You won’t understand this until you have had them done. Specifically in the fitness industry, most girls that compete or are planning to compete on stage, will tend to go under the knife. Although they say the competitors are not judged on having a nice set of boobs, let’s be honest and say it looks cleaner and will stand out more than the other girl who is without. Here are just a few tips I have for those planning to or who have just had a Breast Augmentation.

1. Know your surgeon

Please be aware that there are dodgy surgeons out there! Most of which still continue to perform surgeries on a daily basis. Research your doctor from top to bottom. Find out anything you can about them. There are websites you can go on to find out about plastic surgeons that have write ups of people and their experiences, some good and bad. You’ll feel better when there are no horrible previous lawsuits about them.

2. Find the correct size

Your first initial thoughts of determining what size to go is very questionable, it is the most important decision you will make. Stop thinking. Be prepared for your doctor to throw a curve ball at you! As I’ve had experience in this department, I recommend (only if the doctor says it is possible) going at least 1 or 2 sizes up from your first fitting. Some girls often find that they choose a size they don’t think will be too over bearing but then regret it later and wish they had of gone bigger. Some doctors will advise the right recommendation suited for your body structure but their logic on pleasing the patient can often intervene with the patients’ best interests at heart. A doctor is obliged to give you their professional and caring opinion when making your size selection. You’ll be surprised but there is actually a chart of measurements that helps determine which size CC you should be getting (YES maths should be included in your decision). If your skin is too tight or you hold a small chest capacity, this can also impact on what size you will be able to go. You need to be confident that he or she is helping you make the right choice when selecting your size.

3. Prepare your home

Having all your sheets washed, food prepped and house clean before you go in, will feel so relieving when you get home. Ensure that everything is in reaching distance and easily accessible. Hanging out your clothes will also be off the cards to I suggest you invest in a low fold out clothes line for when you are up to the task.

4. Have your Support Garment

TRUST ME when I tell you, purchasing a good quality support garment for when the surgery is over will be your life saver! You will be so sore and uncomfortable and the bra will automatically make you feel safe and protected. It is important to find the right bra to give you the right support, if not it could result in your new perky boobs losing their firmness and may drop earlier than expected. Not only will it keep your dressings in place but also having the tightness around you will give you peace of mind. My advice would be to have 2 there alternating each day. Then you’ll have a clean one waiting each time you change.

5. Make sure you have a friend

After surgery you will need a friend or relative to pick you up from the hospital. Most surgeries only take about 1 – 3 hours, without complications and if you are in Australia, day surgery is normally all your hospital visit will be. This person will need to a have a caring heart and needs to keep in mind how drowsy and delirious you will be.

6. Drugs are your friend

Despite your view on pain relief, it will definitely be your friend while you’re in recovery stages. Endone is a common narcotic that doctors prescribe for cases like this. As it contains Codeine, you cannot buy it over the counter and you will need your doctor to write you a prescription. The codeine has a tendency of causing nausea so I recommend asking for an anti-nausea medication to take as well. Once again, due to you not being able to drive home let alone visit a pharmacy, your carer will be responsible for organising this.

7. Be prepared to sleep on your back

For weeks after my surgery I was still sleeping on my back because I was so paranoid I was going to bust or tear something. Changing positions is an uneasy feeling but in time you will begin to feel comfortable at your own precautions. If you’re feeling still a bit unsure, it helps to have a pillow underneath you if you rotate on your side. Still continue to sleep in your support bra for a few months as you it will keep everything in whilst you’re changing your sleep positions.

8. Healing time TRUMPS lifting time

You might be eager to head back into your gym and pump some weights; however there are a few things you need to think about. While you’re doing your high intensity run on the treadmill, your boobs are running with you. While you’re pushing that bench press, your boobs are pushing too. You need to let your wounds and boobs heal before you do any heavy lifting. You don’t want to waste all that money and time on an uneducated decision. From my experience coordinated with my doctors’ requirements, I recommend 6-8 weeks from lifting upper body (ie Chest, back, shoulders, arms) and 3-4 weeks for training legs. Cardio – I was back at the gym the week after. I needed to get out of the house and doing a light walk or light bike pedalling was helping me. As long as your movements aren’t drastic, this will be fine. If you’re a runner or a crossfit legend, I would still wait atleast 6 weeks before you go doing any burpees.

9. Spend the money

You’re healed?? YES! An exciting time! You get to go shopping and buy a whole new draw of bras to show off your new assets. BE PREPARED TO SPEND THE MONEY! If anything, allowing costs for new good quality, comfortable and supportive bras should be including in your surgery costs. You might not believe me when I tell you, but having the right support for your breasts throughout the rest of your life will be the best thing you could do for them. I recommend you getting professionally sized, as you will have absolutely no idea what cup and band size you will be. What you asked for will most likely be a different outcome in sizes. Some girls don’t realise that band and cup sizes ratio together.

Eg. If you are a size 10 band size and an E cup size, you could also get away with being an 8F or a 12DD. Don’t just put your size in concrete as different brands do size differently to some others.

My point I’m trying to make is that you get what you pay for. You should invest in spending a little more than what you were before when you were a B or C cup. Your days of buying those skimpy little 2 for $15 bras you might see at Cotton On shouldn’t be on your “Need to buy” list.

Ladies, it is commonly known that we sweat while we’re at the gym. Whether we’re running on the treadmill or pretending to lift those heavy weights. We sweat. If you are one of those who have been blessed with a natural bust, big or small, or if you have gone and made those itty bitie titties surgically larger, you all have to be prepared to suffer the consequences.

The correct definition for boob chafe is Intertrigo. Although it can affect other common areas of your body (armpits, groin) it often occurs underneath your breasts due to the friction of skin and clothing rubbing against each other. Therefore, having the moisture from your sweat soaked sports bra as well as the heat isn’t helping the area breathe freely. The lack of circulaltion causes the infection to inflame which can result in a very sore and itchy area.

A few simple steps to avoid boob chafe

1. Shower regularly

Although this might be a no brainer, you would be surprised in how many people really don’t. Having a shower as soon as you get home from the gym can not only prevent the infection but can also help reduce pimples and black heads. Having excess dirt and moisture just hanging about on top of your skin isn’t any girls ideal outcome.

2. Wear the correct support gear

Not only will wearing the right size sports bra help boobs sit up nice and perky but it will also decrease the rate of chafe. If the bra is nice and firm (not too small) your breasts won’t have a lot to move around, therefore will be more contained while you’re strutting your stuff on the treadmill.

3. Wash your bra

Lets face it, putting on a bra we’ve sweated our guts off in at the gym the day before, is not nice to put on the next day. You can smell your lovely sweat build up from the day before and probably still feels nice and moist. Once again, allowing that extra moisture sitting will just gather more bacteria to the surface.

4. Use a medicated soap

There are some soaps on the market these days that contain so many ingredients that advertise how amazing they are for your skin. Most are not and can anger the skin affected area. Using something such as Gamophen will be more gentle on your body. Although not like the pretty smelly stuff, Gamophen thouroughly cleanses blocked pores and removes excess oil. It also gives all-over body odour protection.

If by unlucky chance you’ve already gained this unfortunate infection, here are a few cheap home treatments to relieve the area

Milk

Dab some cotton wool in a bowl of cold milk and gently apply to the itchy surface. It will instantly soothe and give you relief. Continue the process for half an hour or until the burning sensation stops, then wash with warm soapy water.

Cold water wash

Before having a full body shower, rinse the area first with cold water. It will help close the pores, thus reducing the sweating and appearance of the rash.

Coconut Oil

Thanks to its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, Coconut oil has a soothing and healing effect on skin that helps provide relief from rashes. Due to its also greasy nature, it will help to prevent friction that causes rashes in the first place. Simple apply coconut oil (just from Coles) to the affected area and allow it to absorb into the skin. Repeat morning and night until the itchiness and infection has disappeared.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera has a cooling effect that will give you relief from the burning sensation caused by rashes. As well as coconut oil, it also contains anti-bacterial and anti-fungal qualities. Apply at night and cover with a loose fitting top to sleep in.

WHY SHOULD YOU WEAR A SUPPORT GARMENT AFTER A BREAST AUGMENTATION??

Having a breast augmentation is an exciting time. Scheduling all the pre appointments with your surgeon and setting the date to arrange all the minor details. Before you know it, the day arrives. It’s a time that you’re expecting to wake up with the most desirable set of new boobs. Although that will most certainly be the outcome, there are other factors that you need to prepare yourself (and your breasts) for on the day. Whilst preparing your hospital bag it’s important to pack the most important attire. Your Compression Bra.

TRUST ME when I tell you that although you don’t know it yet, your compression garment will be the most secure thing comforting you after you leave the hospital.

It is important that you find the right bra to give you the right support, if not it could result in your new perky boobs losing their firmness and may drop earlier than expected.

Not only do you need prevent this from happening but also having the tight padding around you will give you peace of mind.

How will I know what size compression bra to get? There is no right answer. Depending on how extreme and dramatic your cup size will be, I would go for something that is going to cover the whole of your chest. If your support garment is too big, it won’t give you the support it is invented for. Going for the tighter option will hold your lovely big bust up.

When can you wear a push up bra? My answer is recommending you wait 2-3 months. This allows plenty of time for the implants to settle and helps the implant cavity heal. After my first surgery I couldn’t wait to be able to wear my sexy push up, cleavage enhancer bra. I learnt at the time that it was not practical at all.

When can I wear an underwired bra? If you’re having a standard breast augmentation, I recommend 6-8 weeks post surgery. If you don’t wait the appropriate amount of time, the underwire can rub on your wound (if the cut was under the breast) and cause an infection, which could be painful.

Your surgeon will give you his requirements on how long to he recommends to wear the support bra, but you’ll appreciate the do-up zip at the front to help you get in and out of it daily. Although you may find the appearance of the bras unattractive, suck it up. It’s not for long, and will be worth it in the end.

TIP – After the correct amount of time where you stop wearing your support garment, continue to wear it during the night… We don’t know what we might do in our sleep.

Ever wondered what some bras actually mean?? Sometimes the names of bras can be confusing and too technical when trying to find the right type of bra.

Ever wondered what some bras actually mean?? Sometimes the names of bras can be confusing and too technical when trying to find the right type of bra. We’ve broken some of the titles down for you to make it a bit easier when choosing the comfort, support and appearance of your next bra purchase.

What is a Plunge bra?

A plunge bra is more designed for a lower cleavage. Suitable for women with a fuller bust who don’t want to “over-do” their bulge. It contains angled cups and a more openly lowered centre. The straps on a plunge bra are usually set widely apart and unlike push-up bras, generally aren’t as heavily padded so if you have fuller breasts, it is a perfect style to support them. Also can come in swimwear.

What is a Push-up bra?

A Push-up bra is a fashion bra that not only creates the appearance of increased cleavage but is also designed to give “boost” on what is already there. Like the plunge bra, it also contains angled cups but the foam padding in the push-up bra, pushes the breasts inwards and upwards, towards the centre of the chest.

What is an Underwire bra?

An Underwire bra contains a wire made of metal, plastic or resin, which is inserted into the bra in a thin semi-circular shape. It’s sewn into the fabric underneath the breast, pushing and supporting it up to give your boobs that lift. An underwire can be used alone with a thinner material on top or could be used along side with another style of bra such as a Balcony bra.

What is a Moulded bra?

A Moulded bra shapes your natural breast. It usually doesn’t contain padding and is more fit for comfort rather than appearance. The bra can also come underwired with a softer fabric.

What is a Padded bra?

Similar to a Push-up bra, a Padded bra also contains foam padding to try and enhance a bust size and cleavage perception. However, the padding in this particular bra offers more support for the breasts rather than give significant over boost.

What is a post surgery compression garment?

A post op compression garment is a tight and firm bra that is worn after a breast enhancement or lift to prevent boobs from sagging as well a protect them.

What is a Bandeau bra?

A Bandeau bra is a strapless piece of material that is worn across the breasts. It often contains cup inserts for shape and padding. Usually worn under a dress or top for a less a revealing look. Offers little or no cleavage.

What is a Nursing Bra?

A Nursing bra is a garment Women who have recently given birth to a baby would wear to simplify breastfeeding. The bra often has adjustable straps and an a detachable cup to clip up and down when they are feeding. Most will also have thicker padding to absorb leftover liquid.
